Literature Jacques-Antoine Vallin is a French painter mainly active in the eighteenth century. He entered the school of the Royal Academy of Painting in 1779 under the protection of the painter of history Gabriel Doyen; he was also a student of Antoine-François Callet and Antoine Renou (1731 - 1806). He is known as an elegant specialist in the depictions of bathers, nymphs and other more or less naked bacchantes, mythological scenes against a backdrop of glades or tree-covered landscapes, a genre he appropriated for nearly thirty years. He also produced portraits of Greuzian inspiration, and several paintings of ancient or modern history which he presented in priority to the Salon. Vallin is in a way the extension of the gallant bacchanals and pastorales of Jacques-Philippe Caresme (1734 - 1796), but with a vein much less Rubenian and more neoclassical, corresponding to his time.
