"Classic Landscape With Jupiter And Mnemosyne. Dutch School Seventeenth"
Oil on canvas Beautiful Italian 17th century frame carved and gilded Total dimensions; 65 x 77 cm In our painting Johannes Glauber, brush a classic landscape where Jupiter takes the appearance of a shepherd to better approach and seduce Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. Johannes Glauber Dutch painter and engraver (Utrecht 1646/1650 - Schoonhoven around 1726). He studied at Nicolaes Berchem, then worked as a copyist of Italian paintings in Amsterdam. He travels to France (1671-1675), where he is a pupil of A. Van der Kabel in Lyon, then, from 1675, in Italy. Then - apart from a six-month stay in Copenhagen - he stayed in Hamburg (1684), Copenhagen, then Amsterdam, where he worked in the studio of the painter Gérard de Lairesse; in 1687, he was in The Hague, before finally settling in Schoonhoven. Glauber paints Italian landscapes, but not in that "Italianating" style, typically Dutch, that his predecessors and many of his contemporaries practiced. Heroic landscapes (examples at the Prado, the Kassel Museum, Brunswick (Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum), Copenhagen (SM f. K.), the Louvre (1686), and the museums of Cherbourg, Grenoble, Nantes , Montpellier, Rouen) are inspired by French masters such as Poussin and Gaspard Dughet, which explains their "classical" character, different from the works of his master Berchem. They are not shepherds and their flocks, but characters dressed in the antique that take place in his paintings; this French style seems to have been particularly popular at the court of the stadhouders, since the artist was responsible for decorating large landscapes the palaces of Loo and Soestdijk (the Bath of Diana, Salmacis and Hermaphrodite, Rijksmuseum). We must also mention its important activity as an engraver etching ... Bel state. Sold with invoice & certificate
