Native of Rodez, Maurice Bompard attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1878.
Like many of his comtemporaries, he was very quickly attracted by travel, in Spain, in the East, and will get a travel grant in 1882, which will mark his debut as a traveling painter: Biskra and Algeria from 1889 to end in Venice.
