Saint Florian in carved polychrome wood, dressed and helmeted in the Roman holding his banner with one hand and a bucket on the other. Sculpture in high relief polychrome wood, back sided. H. 51 cm approx. Good condition. XVIII The image of Saint Florian, the first canonized saint martyr of Austria, spreads in southern Germany and in Tyrol from the 15th century. Following the iconographic convention, a hairless young man, his face slightly inclined and melancholy, dressed in an armor, holds in his hand a container which he pours on a house in flames. The protection of St. Florian is indeed required against fires, in addition to floods, since the second half of the fifteenth century This cult refers to its legend. An officer of the Roman army in the time of Diocletian, he secretly converted to Christianity, while Rome engaged in persecution against Christians. Commander of the region of Lorsch, he refuses to sacrifice to the imperial cult and admits his conversion. Persecuted, thrown from a bridge, he is drowned in the river Enns, near which stands the largest and most famous baroque abbey in Upper Austria: he is the patron saint and bears his name.
