Object description :

"Pitch In Tin (tin) - Rouen, XVII ème S."

Rare pitcher pewter, baseboard foot, upright cup, raised lid with flat roof and tasseled puck.
Property mark II.
Trace of master MARK.
Height: 17.7 cm.
ROUEN, middle of the XVII th century

Condition : two filling at the bottom of the belly

Although of medieval typology the piece is melted radially and attests to the early adoption in Rouen of this new technique which succeeds to that of the longitudinal melt.

Recall that these pitchers were wine measures under the Old Regime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be periodically checked by the royal or ecclesiastical power to ensure "good measure" to the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers that wear gauging marks are very rare. The Metric System appears at the very beginning of the 19th century and takes several decades to impose because of the resistance to change shown by the users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures will eventually replace the pitchers that had, it is true, a variety of interesting forms and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinity of gaugings different from one city to another and often even from one village to another, as close as they are.
