GREAT TANGKA INDIA XIXth century GOLDEN WOOD FRAMEWORK A thangka, also spelled "tangka", "thanka" or "tanka" (pronunciation: [tʰɑːŋkɑː), literally "thing that one unwinds", "roll" 1, is a painting, a drawing, or a cloth on canvas2 originating in India and characteristic of Tibetan Buddhist culture. We can find all sizes, from portable thangkas that can be rolled up and unwound with two sticks in hems, even monumental thangkas to be rolled out on a hillside or on a wall thangka and can reach several tens of meters high.
