"Virgin In Majesty "allaitante", Catalonia, Early 14th Century"
Exceptional Madonna and Child in Majesty "allaitante", carved in round bump, early 14th century.
The Virgin is represented in a frontal position, seated on a throne, in the medieval tradition of the "Sedes Sapientiae" of the 12th and 13th centuries. She carries on her left knee the child Jesus who turns his face lightly towards the breast of his mother. The Virgin is wearing a beautiful crown and wearing a long pleated dress and a coat. The face of the Virgin expresses a great sweetness and is part of this new Marian piety at the beginning of the 14th century, which highlights the theme of the "virgins of tenderness". The child Jesus, with a baby face and brown curls, is also dressed in a tunic covered by a cloak.

This statuary group is called "Mare de Déu de la Llet" in Spanish. It bears witness to the transition that takes place between the 13th and 14th centuries in Marian iconography:
- we have the old Romanesque model representing the Virgin "incarnation of the Church" in hieratic position, holding her child from the front
- then we have a more intimate representation. The baby Jesus is sitting on the lap of his mother and the theme of the "Mother Virgin" appears. The draperies also soften and the faces of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus are different.
