Object description :

"Pair Of Bergeres Louis XVI Stamped Ndlps For Nicolas-pierre Delaporte"
Pair of beechwood chairs molded, carved and lacquered, with cabriolet backrest, resting on legs tapered, fluted and rudentés. N.DLP.S stamp on each, for Nicolas-Pierre DELAPORTE (Nicolas De La Porte Sculpsit). Louis XVI period. Covered with a green silk trim. Provenance: Former Max LINDER Collection, then Maud Linder by descent. The DELAPORTE dynasty Sometimes referred to as Laporte or La Porte, the DELAPORTEs were, from the end of the 17th century, a dynasty of Parisian carpenters whose activity will cover the entire 18th century. Given the variety or otherwise of the similarity of their stamped it is difficult and sometimes impossible to assign certain seats to one or the other. It is also a tradition to assign the seats Louis XVI stamped Mr. DELAPORTE, stamped by Martin DELAPORTE, the son of his nephew, Martin-Nicolas DELAPORTE (master April 24, 1765, died December 20, 1784). Martin DELAPORTE died in 1756, it seems impossible that he stamped Louis XVI seats, moreover we know no other stamp for Martin-Nicolas DELAPORTE. The N.DLP.S stamp is that of Nicolas-Pierre DELAPORTE. It is frequently associated with that of the carpenter Martin JULLIEN. Its production consists of classic Louis XVI chairs, well balanced proportions and very neat workmanship. The decor is limited to moldings, rosettes dice assemblies and sometimes twisted grooves of the feet. As for Martin JULLIEN, the name of JACOB has been mentioned, as this glowing comparison can only be applied to some of his exceptional models. Provenance: The MAX LINDER collection: This pair of seats adorned the mansion that filmmaker Max LINDER (December 16, 1883, Saint-Loubès - November 1, 1925, Paris) had built in Neuilly. Max LINDER was one of the greatest silent comedy stars. Discovered by Charles Pathé in 1905, he will be a screenwriter, director and actor. In 1910, he created the character of Max, a young dandy always involved in crazy adventures, who will become a leading film attraction and is considered the first international film star. In particular, he will influence Charlie Chaplin's creation of Charlot's character. He will own and operate a movie theater bearing his name in Paris, which still exists. The mansion and the collections he housed will be passed on to his only daughter Maud by succession. She will spend her life rediscovering and promoting the work of her father. She will live in the house until her death, without descendants, on October 25, 2017. MUSEUMS: VERSAILLES, CHÂTEAU - Turkish bed carved and gilded. BORDEAUX, MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS - Armchair in cabriolet beech molded scupté and lacquered. NEW-YORK, METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ARTS - Pair of Louis XVI seats in beech molded, carved and lacquered (circa 1785).
