Object description :

"Alpine Scene By A. De Bar"
Canvas: 40.7 x 32.2 / Original frame: 56 x 46.5 cm Signed and dated << Adre de Bar 1851 >> under the base of the rock at the bottom right. A. de Bar (Montreuil sur Mer 1821/1908) exhibited regularly from 1845 to 1870. Painter of landscapes, draftsman, engraver, he has an important place among the illustrators of the Second Empire. In 1856 he spent a year in Egypt as draftsman of the Expedition of the Sources of the Nile. He provides an abundant collaboration at the <Magasin Pittoresque>, <Musée des Familles> and <Tour du Monde>. It illustrates many books ("The Lake" of Lamartine, and books on travel: <Trip Töpffler through the Alps>, <The Sources of the Nile>, Sudan, India ... Because of the strong contrasts in this painting, it is difficult to render details in dark areas, and I have sub- and over-exposed photos.
