"Tobacco Box Shaped Maritime Transport Ballot"Very interesting topic on the Turkish tobacco trade to the port of Odessa. Maritime trade in the 19th century is blooming bringing with it its share of various cargoes and mythical routes such as Marseille-Istanbul-Odessa. It is reported in maritime and colonial annals of that time the history of the precious Turkish tobacco known for its quality and exported to many destinations. It was almost logical to see objects appear on this theme such as this one. Everything is dedicated to the tobacco trade with this box which represents a boob of tobacco trompe l'oeil, finely carved wood as a braiding is remarkable. It is added over a brass net in imitation of a string of maintenance. The lid opening with 2 hinges is decorated with embossed brass letters indicating: TABAC TURC ODESSA and 4 brass ovals at the corners. The box has a lock and a key that work (1/4 turn to the left is enough to close) This box is of French manufacture of the late 19th century, a quality walnut wood. It has of course served its original purpose and still smells a sweet smell of tobacco!
