Zulu Isicholos Headdress flag

Object description :

"Zulu Isicholos Headdress"
- Zulu women wear broad hats, called Isicholos, like this one, to proclaim their marital status. These headdresses, like all beaded ornaments, were distinctive signs to decode the status and identity of their owner. Round and conical hats, most commonly distributed, are made of human hair mixed with wool fibers, fixed on a basketry frame, and colored red and then coated with grease and ocher. This type of cap is derived a hairstyle worn in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. - Dimensions: H 70cm W 43cm with base
