"Mappin And Webb's (1890), Bottle Holder, Early Twentieth"
Silver metal bottle holder, opening to let the bottle through, interlaced pearl clasp, handle, Maison Mappin and Webb's, London. Period early twentieth. HISTORY OF MAPPIN & WEBB In 1810, Joseph Mappin founded a printing career in Fargate, Sheffield. This concern was passed on to one of his sons and finally, the engraving activity ended. Another son of Joseph Mappin (also called Joseph) continued the cutler's business in Sheffield (Norfolk Street). He died in 1841 and until 1846 the firm was led by his son Frederick Thorpe Mappin who took his brothers in the business and the company became Joseph Mappin & Co. In 1846 the case was merged with that of William Samson & Sounds changing for Mappin Brothers. His partners were the four sons of the founder, Frederick Thorpe Mappin, Edward Mappin, Joseph Charles Mappin and John Newton Mappin. In 1850, John Newton Mappin retired from Mappin Brothers and established a new company originally trading Mappin & Co, changed in 1863 in Mappin & Webb after an agreement to avoid confusion between the names of the two companies. Mappin Brothers continued to be advertised as the original company, but in 1902 it was closed after being amalgamated with Mappin & Webb Ltd. In 1963, Mappin & Webb was amalgamated in Colombia - Silverware Ltd in collaboration with Elkington & Co Ltd and Walker & Hall Ltd. For a line of his silverplate production Mappin & Webb used the Princes Plate brand. The Mappin and Webb goldsmith plants in Sheffield were closed in 1971. Currently, Mappin & Webb is a subsidiary of Sears Holding Ltd.
