Object description :

"Capriccio Architectural Luigi Mayer"
Oil painting on canvas with dimensions of 49 x 63 without frame and 60 x 74 cm with frame representing an architectural whim signed in the center of Mayer F. (Rome 1750 - 1803). In 1700 was born the Vedutismo, a pictorial genre based on the representation of views (hence the name) of natural landscapes and citizens, who become the absolute protagonists of the paintings. The great fortune and the diffusion of this kind are mainly due to the new approach that the travelers of the Grand Tour, from the second half of the 18th century, have towards the places visited; In fact, are no longer content with a generic and sometimes picturesque and idealized memory of travel, but the search for a visual testimony, the most lucid and faithful as possible, documentary one could say, of the landscape, the archaeological sites, the ruins, but also the people who live there, and all the naturalistic landscape (the activity of the volcanoes, the constitution of the rocks, the rich unusual and extraordinary vegetation) in which they are immersed. Here is how painters painters of travelers (often engaged by the traveler at home or on the spot, although sometimes the travelers themselves expressing with figurative language their emotions), who in their sketchbook depicting places with sketches quick, often in pencil, often adding annotations on the date and time of execution, on the places indicated, or on the colors to be used, drawings which are then completed during the stages of the journey. By observing this painting and its stylistic data, it should be emphasized that the artistic expression of a singular painter specializing in landscape and outdoor architecture is highlighted. We are faced with an artist, the Mayer, who shows that he understood the Italian and European peasant culture refined in vogue in the second half of the eighteenth century. It will be helpful to remember that the purpose of these pleasing compositions was generally to link the figure to landscape painting through the scenes of view. The light painting material, the particular shade of blue colors, very current colors with regard to nature and by the arrivals a neutral color, a way to highlight, are all the characters that refer to the culture figurative of Louis Mayer, confirmed what the signature presents in the painting itself. The painting, in an excellent state of readability, represents a scenographically well-arranged scenic view, including a fountain and classical ruins with towering arches belonging to an old building. Around the stylistic data of the painting in question emerges a remarkable pictorial quality flanked by a pronounced taste for the view, embellished with warm and balanced tints. Mayer has managed to obtain marvelous results in his compositions with the ruins on which, because of the passage of time pushed the weeds, and where in a eighteenth-century singular style Arcadia could blend into the admirable balance likewise memories of St. Rose and G Ghisolfi.
