"Allegory Of Charity Carlo Cignani"
Oil painting on canvas painted by the size of 105 x 120 cm without frame and 125 x 140 with frame representing an allegory of love, a woman with three children of the painter Carlo Cignani (Bologna 1628-1719 Forli). Art historians accrediting in Cignani have led a change in style and taste took place around 1670 as part of the Bologna School, which allowed him to conjure painters with influences of renian tradition to make them match the academic spirit. Formed by Giovanni Battista Cairo and Francesco Albani, vividly was influenced by Annibale Carracci, Correggio and the perspective from below, as well as the use of color, the works of Melozzo da Forli. Cignani, therefore, also became part of the tradition of the Forlì school, to the development of which he contributed with his own work. After his early works, in Bologna, strongly Baroque, he worked in Rome from 1662 where he was prince of the Accademia di San Luca in 1710. In a first critical assumptions the work in question was returned to the period between 1662 and 1665, which coincides with the artist's stay in Rome, arrived in the pope's capital following Cardinal Farnese (Roli 1987, pp. 36-38). Beatrice Buscaroli recently proposed a date next to 1685, placing both this painting, is a second version of the same - a little lower in the measures, currently kept in a private collection - at the time the artist Soi Cosimo III from Tuscany, destined for the Uffizi Gallery. In 1686, a "Venus with putti little less than the real" Carlo Cignani was shown to the Royal Highness in Tuscany manuscript Academic Mute Concorde in Ravenna and Bologna (published in the Bolognese painters of the seventeenth century in the galleries of Florence, catalog exhibition organized by E. A work by the artist with the same subject was mentioned in a 1698 inventory of the Pitti Palace and, later, in that of 1713 of the Grand Prince Ferdinando's collection. The painting was reproduced in an engraving around 1730 by Giovanni Antonio Lorenzini and the print was included in the volume dedicated to the Grand Ducal collections. The painting is in good readability and represents an iconographic subject that integrates a generalized and tested system that puts the mother with the breastfed baby at the center of the composition close to two other children, including one in this mild case that sleeps in her cradle . We can note the value of our painter with singular technical and executive skills; it is obvious that we are faced with an interesting composition, imbued with a renewed formal essence, in harmony with the pictorial experiments used at that time. The composition is very balanced and the colors skillfully launched, the quality especially in the form while the scene, here represented, developed intelligently with never excessive colors clearly falls in the excellence theme of the paintings of this time, or in the so-called painting Baroque Carlo Cignani he was an excellent master. This painting has the stylistic data and the compositional and chromatic characteristics typical of the best period of our painter, that of Forli. This charity is an "emblematic work of Cignani because you find that the classic devotional painter mixed with the typical gestures, as well as the setting of the composition, the brilliance of the colors and the particular way of draperies that are found in other works. In this table, we can see how the figure of the woman and that of the children have a formal rigor, but they are painted with an easy executive flair; the acute and variegated indices emerge with obviousness and go from luminous witnesses to the reinterpretation of the tenebrism; well-known characters that make this woman troubling, dark and beautiful. The safe route of brushstrokes almost drawn and strong chiaroscuro reveals a graphic preparation and pictorial behavior cultivated and complex, with special treatment: the representation of the landscape in the background away, the magic with a potential game can develop a love for nature from which we all come.
