AGARD Charles Jean, born January 3, 1866 in Savignac-de-Nontron (Dordogne), died in 1950 in Nesles-la-Vallee (Val d'Oise), French, painter of portraits, landscapes, still lifes, flowers, postimpressionist. Fellow of his native department, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under the direction of Bonnat. Engaged politically, he took an anti-colonialist stance, collaborating with New Times with Pissaro, Luce and Sisley. Under the guidance of Puvis de Chavannes, he began to exhibit. He was seen in 1893 at the Salon des Independants, where he was a member of the committee. Until 1942, he exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts, which he was associated since 1914. He also participated in the Salon d'Automne. The luminous quality of his paintings is sometimes similar to that of Pissaro's landscapes, particularly in his ranges of soft greens and light reds. We quote from him: Autumn Sun - The small village of Bennecourt - Fresh shading 1910. Bibliography: Gerald Schurr, The Little Masters of Painting 1820-1920, value of tomorrow, t.II, The Editions of the Amateur , Paris 1982. See Benezit.
