Biography
Apel • Fenosa(1899-1988) was a Spanish sculptor.He was born in Barcelona in a cultured environment.He became sculptor by following a course which led him to work in the studio of Enrique Casanovas.It endorses the ideas of modernism and rallied the group of evolutionists represented by Rebull, Granyer, Viladomat.Having sympathies for the anarchist cause, he refused military service and moved to France in 1920, stopping briefly in Toulouse before going up in Paris in 1921. He quickly integrate the arts community and meets Jules Supervielle, Max Jacob and especially Picasso.This encourages the path of sculpture and buys his first Parisian works.Therefore, Fenosa exhibited both in Paris and Barcelona in 1924, Max Jacob preface his first Paris exhibition.Fenosa is in Catalonia when in 1931 was proclaimed the Second Spanish Republic: there is and close anarchists fought in the Republican ranks during the Spanish Civil War.He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1936. On arrival in power of the Franco regime, he settled in Paris.
In 1942, Apel • Fenosa met Paul Eluard Picasso.There long have lunch several times a week with the painter and the poet.Eluard commissioned a bust of himself in the lost wax, then another of his wife Nusch.In 1944, the Limousin Liberation Committee commissioned a sculpture commemorating the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane: the Monument to the Martyrs of Oradour;the work is installed at the entrance of Limoges in 1980 and it was only in 1999 that it finds its place in Oradour.From 1946 Fenosa individually or collectively exhibited in Paris, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Prague, New York, Tokyo, Rabat, Osaka, Casablanca, Carrara.The greatest writers and poets of his time préfacent his personal exhibitions: Eluard, Cocteau, Supervielle Ponge Neruda, Cournot Caillois Espriu ... In 1981, he creates custom Unesco statuette L'Olivierwhich will be the trophy awarded to the winners of the Peace Education, awarded annually by the organization.In 1982 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia;the following year it was the French Legion of Honor, and in 1987, the Gold Medal of the city of Barcelona.
