The story is a fiction of the first Crusade, where Christian knights led by Godefroy de Bouillon fight the Saracens in order to lift the siege of Jerusalem. The story opens with the investiture of Godefroi de Bouillon to whom God confers the mission of liberating the Holy Sepulcher. But the principal Christian knights, Renaud and Tancred, are diverted from the conquest of Jerusalem by the magician Armide, who tries to seduce as many knights as possible: "She deploys all the devices to take in her nets some new lover; it does not have for all, or always, the same / face, but changes by turns in ways and pace. The knight Tancred, one of the leaders of the army of Godefroy de Bouillon, has triumphed over Argant, king of Circassie who swears his loss with his ally, Princess Herminie, torn between his hatred and his contradictory love for the winner Christian. With the help of the magician Ismenor, Argant and Herminie pursue Tancred, who loves and is loved by her prisoner, the Princess Clorinde, a renowned warrior, herself beloved by Argant. After many adventures and spells designed by Ismenor to help the jealous fury of Argant and Herminie, the two unfortunate lovers, the proud Clorinde will be killed in battle by Tancred, victim of a tragic mistake. Before dying, she converted to Christianity.
