Object description :

"Sissano Paddle"
Paddle from Sissano Lagoon, northern coast of Papua New Guinea. These paddles are very rare to find, the lagoon having been devastated as well as the neighboring populations at the end of the 90s by a tsunami. Wooden scult and engraved on the end of the handle and both sides of the blade. the paddle is whole and not restored, which is rather rare; it was painted like all paddles and canoes of this region with Western paintings (of German or Dutch origin at the beginning of the 20th century) Paddles are used by women to go fishing; however they are painted and carved by men with protective motifs often animal and floral. Period 60s-70s; beautiful patina of use. Sold without stand Shipping charges included
