"Wooden Yam Mask"
Abelam yam mask, Maprik region, Papua New Guinea. Hard carved wood, remnants of red pigments and lime. Representation of an ancestor with frontal and nose adornment, almond eyes typical of the Abelams; valuable warrior ornament. The mask is surmounted by two hornbill heads (carved on each side), a totemic bird in this population. Like wicker masks, they were used to dress the large yams of competitions during harvest ceremonies. Beautiful patina of use, time first half of the twentieth century. Outstanding piece, rare.
