Abelam yam mask, Maprik region, Papua New Guinea. In wood and natural pigments. Yam is the main food source in the Sepik River Valley. A symbol of the procreative faculty of man and his clan, the most important tubers become valuable goods. The masks are used to dress the most beautiful of these tubers (up to 3m long) selected for the harvest ceremony. The mask represents the head of the yam, a very symbolic way to prove that these sacred tubers have a soul ... Piece sold with its base. Mid 20th century.
