"Asmat Statue"
Statue of ancestor of protection called "Kawe" at the Asmat, Papua, (present Indonesian province) In Wood lége, representation of a mythical ancestor with its cap and scarification. Object of a beautiful aesthetic and graphic quality. Presence of insect holes or worms in situ. These sculptures are known only in the center Asmat and Northwest Asmat. These statues are made during the construction of a new house of men. The carved figures represent some dead who were once present in the flesh during the festival. These carvings are always made of soft wood so that they can rot as soon as possible after the feast, in order to spread their supernatural powers. Sold piece soclée.
