"Large Portrait Of A Gentleman By The Knight Dagoty, XVIII"
Important and rare oval portrait, representing a gentleman dressed in a dark velvet jacket a vest of yellow silk embroidered with flowers, he is wearing a short powdered wig attached to the back with a big black satin ribbon. The painting is dated 1777, and annotated by the Chevalier Dagoty (1740-1786) Dagoty is a French painter from a large family of artists, whose father was engraver. Making his career in France, he became the protector of Marie Antoinette, who ordered a portrait to send him to Vienna. But he was criticized by relatives of the queen, which did not prevent him from making portraits of the Contessa de Provence and the Contesse d'Artois.
