Turkey, 18th-19th century, Ottoman EmpireLength: 25 cm Hollow spoon, ivory fitting, the long handle, composed of engraved coral and alternating black enamelled brass rings, ends with a turned ivory bead. This type of spoon was intended for sherbet, ice-cold fruit granita, much appreciated in the Ottoman Court, and which gave its name to the French sorbet.
Condition: grits on the edge of the spoon, split on ivory sleeve, visible on photo.
