Object description :

"Venus And Adonis, Follower Of Rubens, Second Half Of The 17th"
Venus and Adonis, follower of PP Rubens, second half of the 17th century. Sold with a certificate of authenticity Oil on canvas rerated in the nineteenth century format tondo (round table, 83cm in diameter) and oak frame Louis XIV (around 1680), carved and gilded with plumes and flowers in the corners (105cm x 110 cm) with its original gilding. Venus and Adonis This painting is a version of the painting by PP Rubens painted around 1635 and preserved at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (oil on canvas 197.5 x 242.9). On the master's picture, one can observe Venus, helped by Cupid, who tries in vain to retain her lover who wants to go hunting, presuming that he will be killed by a wild boar (taken from the metamorphoses of Ovid). The painting is inspired by that of Titian on the same subject. Rubens saw and copied the version of the Prado Museum in Madrid during his stay from 1628-1629. The large-format, brightly colored work place this composition in the mid-1630s or later. X-rays show that Rubens initially gave Adonis a dark expression before taking it back later. Rubens did this painting at the end of his life while suffering from osteoarthritis. The faces are made with a great mastery of painting. The anonymous painter, who reproduced the famous composition of Rubens was probably from the studio or from the entourage of the master.
