Paul Dubois (Nogent-sur-Seine, July 8th 1827 - Paris, May 22th 1905)
Son of an attorney, he first studied law before joining the school of the Beaux-Arts in 1858 thanks to his interest in sculpture. He studied there one year and settled four years in Italy, notably in Florencia. Florentine sculpture of the Renaissance left a mark in his mind and this would influence his art. Great nephew of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, he began exhibiting at the Salon in 1857 under the name of Dubois-Pigalle. His "Juvenile Saint Jean-Baptiste" and "Florentine Singer" exhibited in 1864 and 1865 at the Salon, made him famous. Curator of the Luxembourg Museum in 1873, member of its institue in 1876, director of the school of the Beaux-Arts in 1878.
