Jean VERVISCH (Brussels 1896-1977), post-expressionist painter and draftsman. Pupil at the Academy of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Brussels) at the symbolist painter Henri Ottevaere. Stay in Paris in 1931. Then travel to North Africa and Italy. His work, which testifies to his love of matter and the contrasts of light, combines sensuality and mysticism. Installed for thirty years in Ostend, on the Belgian coast, he frequent Ensor and Spilliaert. He is also a friend of the painters Brusselmans and Tytgat. Works in many Belgian museums and collections.
