Cup silver and gilded bronze decoration on the hunt, signed CAIN, nineteenth time. Auguste Nicolas Cain, born November 10, 1821 in Paris, where he died Aug. 25, 1894 (72 years), is a French animal sculptor. He is the father of the painter and writer Georges Cain, and writer and painter Henri Cain. After working in the family butcher, Auguste Cain entered the studio of Alexandre Guionnet then became a pupil of François Rude. As Antoine-Louis Barye few years earlier, he studied animal anatomy by drawing the garden plants in Paris. In the 1840s it offers silverware patterns for Fannière brothers Rudolfi and House Christophle. Auguste Cain joins with the sculptor Pierre-Jules Leads whose daughter he married in 1852. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1846 with a wax group Warblers defending their nest against a log, now extinct, but was melted later bronze and presented to the 1855 Salon During the 1840s and 1850s, besides sculpture small animal figures, Cain also creates decorative items to animal motifs, such as matchboxes, cups or candle holders.
