"Portrait Of A Gentleman, British C.1700, Oil On Canvas, Follower Of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680)"
Power, wealth and influence were intended to exude in the depiction of this head and shoulders portrait. Characterised by a strong Italianate lighting, the expensive curled wig and the lace cuffs and shirt front are luxury items and costly. The luxury is further enhanced by the brown cloak that falls from the sitter’s right shoulder almost acting as a theatrical curtain revealing the scene. The distinguished social status is clearly emphasised. It is datable to the end of the 17th century and the work demonstrates a shrewd characterisation. The formula employed in this portrait appears not infrequently in Lely’s work with the pose, the hand gesture, and the use of the draped cloak. An interesting example of British portraiture. There is an early twentieth-century label identifying the portrait being in the collection of the Cotterell Baronets. The Cotterell Baronetcy is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created for John Cotterell who was a Member of Parliament for many years. Provenance: Property of the Cotterell Baronets as per label on verso.
