"Period Painting XIX"
This oil on canvas was also painted in the 19th century after a painting by Gleyre Marc-Gabriel-Charles, 1808-1874,entitled "Les Illusions perdus" or "Le Soir", the original work of which is in the Louvre Museum.
Theme of the work: A middle-aged man sat down, a weary traveler, by the sea, an image of infinity. His hand drops his lyre; his gaze turns towards the azure waves, on which a boat glides, which carries a whole swarm of young women crowned with flowers and singing.
These women are the Illusions, who abandon the poet. On the edge of the boat sits a winged genius, Love no doubt, who drops the flowers into the water that he plucks from a crown.
This graceful and somewhat literary composition achieved great success at the Salon of 1842.
Here the work is in a beautiful 19th century gilded frame.
Some usual restorations on the back of the canvas.
