Large oil on canvas signed JD Van Caulaert * representing the portrait of an elegant woman wearing a scarf and a velvet coat, most certainly a resident of Paris, in a gilded wooden frame, from the 20th century. This painting is in good condition. Signed lower right. A note: trace of a restoration on the back, slight wear of time, see photos. We are selling a second painting by this artist on this site. *Jean-Dominique Van Caulaert (1897-1979) French painter, poster artist, illustrator and decorator. He composed his first poster in Belgium in 1916. In 1923 and 1924 he illustrated covers of musical scores for a Belgian publisher, Magritte and other painters worked for this publisher Musical Office. In the 1930s he produced many posters for Mistinguett , Marie Dubas, Josephine Baker, Cécile Sorel, Suzy Solidor, Lys Gauty and Tino Rossi. A talented portraitist, he painted all of Paris until the 1950s. He left for the United States in 1951 and worked 8 months a year in New York and 4 in Paris, until his death at the Villa des Arts in Montmartre. He had been made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He lived in a studio-pavilion at the entrance to the Villa des Arts in Paris, on his return from the United States. Note that he was the friend of Marcel Jean, writer of the surrealist group, and of the painter Louis Marcoussis. Artist highly rated on ArtPrice.
