Ningxia, Five Claw Dragon Rug, Circa 1920 flag

Object description :

"Ningxia, Five Claw Dragon Rug, Circa 1920"
Beijing in the Forbidden City of Ningxia..
Dragon pillar mats are used to decorate the pillars of Buddhist temples and palaces. The mats were attached to the wooden columns by ropes and took on a continuous upward spiral shape. These carpets were graphic visual representations for the mostly illiterate worshipper, assuming a didactic role much in the same way as stained glass windows and sculptural porticoes in Western cathedrals.

The carpet with a single face-to-face dragon having a segmented body embodies the typical style of Ningxia.
