Painter of portraits and landscapes, Jacques Théodore Legrand was a pupil of Isidore Pils. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1876 and 1890.
The Vire Museum retains several works by his hand.
Our work must be an academic or preparatory work carried out in his early years around 1870. This subject from a story by Chateaubriand inspired many painters, such as Girodet, in the 19th century. In the primitive America of the 17th century, the tragic destiny of a young mixed-race Christian, Atala, is in love with Chactas, an Indian whom she saved from a death sentence. Taken in after a long wandering by a missionary, Father Aubry, the young lovers cannot live their love. Prisoner of her mother's vow to devote herself to religion, Atala chooses suicide so as not to give in to her passion, despite Chactas' desire to convert to marry her.
Beyond the representation of the tragic scene, Théodore Legrand uses this subject as a pretext to devote himself to the art of the Landscape with careful work in the rendering of plants, rock and water.
