History: comes from the family of the artist then by descent until today.

Etienne Montagny is a sculptor from Saint-Etienne. He sculpted several sculptures for the square of the town hall of Saint-Etienne but also for the churches of the region. He also worked for the realization of the sculpted decoration of the Louvre of Napoleon 3 (The Fortune for example). This is probably a sketch for a (probably unrealized) monument of a monumental Virgin Mary with a chapel at the base. It is amusing to see that 2 of the sides of the base are carved with scenes in bas-relief: Golgotha with a central opening for the entrance to the chapel and Christ in prayer on the Mount of Olives on the base of the left side.
