"Carl Von Sales Attr. To, Portrait Of Catharina Marth"
CARL VON SALES attr. to
KONLENZ 1791 – 1870 FUERSTENFELD

PORTRAIT OF CATHARINA MARTH (MORD)

Oil on cardboard
21 x 16 cm / 8.3 x 6.3 in (framed 32 x 36 cm / 12.6 x 14.2 in)

PROVENANCE
Private collection, USA.

The provenance of the painting is documented in detail thanks to extensive inscriptions on the back by three different people. The first, in thick ink, appears to be by the hand of Richard Heller, a descendant of the woman portrayed through her daughter Catherine, who married Hermann (?) Heller in the early 19th century. The second inscription, made in a finer hand also in ink, belongs to Richard's son Gerhard (?). And the third inscription, the year of Gerhard's death, is already written in pen.
The painting is a good example of a work of art with a carefully documented provenance. Another version of this portrait is in the collection of Boris Wilnitsky in Vienna.
I am grateful to Boris Wilnitsky for his precious help in establishing the authorship of this portrait.
