Saint Thomas Aquinas, Large Statue From The XVIII Eme Century flag

Object description :

"Saint Thomas Aquinas, Large Statue From The XVIII Eme Century"
A rare statuary representation of Saint Thomas D'Aquin.
a master of scholastic philosophy and Catholic theology born in 1225 near Aquinas in the Kingdom of Sicily.
died in 1274 at the Abbey of Fossanova near Priverno.
he was canonized in 1323 by John XXII.
he is buried in Toulouse at the church of the Jacobins.

our large statue represents the saint wearing the tonsure and holding the pen in a Benedictine habit:
he holds the pen in his left hand and must have been holding a book in his right hand, the latter having disappeared today.
the face is superb and has retained its original polychrome as well as its hands, which is rare for a statue of this size from the beginning of the 18th century.
the face is very interesting and finely carved, it has its mouth open as if ready to explain its ideas.
his clothing is very finely worked and carved the drapery is superbly carved besides at the front as at the back of the statue.
the collar, the lapels of the clothes and the coat are gilded with a resumption of floral elements and decorations in relief in this gilding, the coat is of incredible finesse, take a good look at the photos.
a rare representation of one of the main saint philosophers of the church.
