French, Napoleon III Garniture Clock Set, Circa 1870 flag

Object description :

"French, Napoleon III Garniture Clock Set, Circa 1870"
Important garniture set, consisting of a clock and two 3-light candelabra.
The patinated and gilded bronze clock representing Cupid supporting a drapery which reveals a dial placed on a fluted truncated column. He points to his attributes, a torch and a quiver, supported by a cloud of flowers. The beautifully enamelled dial is signed by F. Berthoud Paris. The whole rests on a rectangular cherry marble base, underlined in the upper part by a double frieze in gilt bronze with flower and interlacing motifs, and in the lower part by a frieze of alternating spandrels and acanthus.
The patinated and gilded bronze candelabras represent two putti holding 3 fleur-de-lys ending in 3 lights.
The signature on the dial of the clock pays homage to Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807), a Swiss watchmaker who moved to Paris in 1747 and became a master in 1754. the Navy after the success of its marine clocks, a field in which it specializes. In 1795, he was elected to the Institute in the Mechanical Arts section. He received the Legion of Honor in 1804 as a member of the Institute. One of his clocks was sold at the Duc d'Aumont sale in 1782 and another at the Choiseul sale in 1786, the bronzes being by P. Gouthière.
