Oil on panel produced in the 16th century by the workshop of Maarten de Vos the Elder (1532-1603), representing penitent Mary Magdalene. Magnificent representation of the Saint with long hair, in a cave opening onto a landscape with a building, monastery or castle, built on the top of a hill. In his hands, an admirably treated wooden crucifix, as well as a skull, a whip and a flask, symbols of vanity and penance. The way in which these attributes are represented recalls the attention to detail of the art of still life. The composition is close to the work of Maarten de Vos on the same subject, known from the engraving, but not identical to it. The scene is reversed, and details differ, which proves that our painting was not made from the engraving, and that it is an original work not slavishly copying a known painting by the master. This is another version made by the workshop of Maarten de Vos. The paintwork is in perfect condition, without any flaws. The fine oak panel is parqueted.
