Object description :

"Cuff Microscope By Cuff, Circa 1745-50"
Important English Cuff-type microscope signed by John Cuff himself and dated around 1745-1750. John Cuff invented his microscope which revolutionized eighteenth century microscopy in 1742. His model was copied by all European builders until the end of the eighteenth century. This microscope is signed on the plate "J. Cuff London". It can be dated between 1742 and the beginning of the 1750s. It has retained its 6 eyepieces, its condensing magnifying glass, its clamp, its fish-plate, its original mirror, and two round-shaped liveboxes. All the accessories are kept in a drawer located below the microscope and the microscope and its blackened wooden base are stored in a large pyramidal mahogany box with a second drawer. The microscope was formerly restored and refinished, as well as the transport box. However, an interesting and complete example of this important microscope in the history of microscopy.
