"Ancient Print Of Abraham Bosse: The Visit To The Nurse"
From a series of six plates: Le Mariage à la ville
State II / II
at the address of Tavernier. R. Dumesnil: 1379
Marriage to the City is presented in a series of six unnumbered plates. Bosse sums up various moments in the life of a young woman: The Marriage Contract, The Bride escorted home, The Childbirth, The Return from baptism, The Visit to the childbirth and The Visit of the nurse. They are presented in the same frame. Published by Leblond in 1633 then by Melchior Tavernier, this suite is, with Le Mariage à la campagne, the first where Bosse really does original work; he opts for the width format and chooses subjects rarely treated before. We do not find anything similar to these different scenes in the painted or engraved production of the time. If we believe the study of Georges Wildenstein (Wildenstein, 1950), the theme of the nurse was a real success, but it is undoubtedly more sober scenes, with few characters, some saucy. If the inventory of Landry Allegrain, bourgeois of Paris, mentions in 1624 a painting representing a Childbirth and a nurse, there is no childbirth scene, no visit to the childbirth, no more than a marriage contract and baptism. It was not until the 18th century, and the suites by Freudenberger and Moreau le Jeune for the Monument du costume (1772-1789), to once again see the episodes from the life of a young person represented in France, with so much detail. couple, again without childbirth.
