Large brown enamelled stoneware jar, ovoid, wide opening.
Yellow relief decoration of two dragoons surrounding the sacred pearl, vegetable tracery, a circular band patterned with "greek" and roped circles. glazed interior of turquoise color.
The decor of this jar is inspired by ancient Chinese dragon jars.
Southeast Asia - Malaysia, 20th Century
Martaban jars were used to store food and water in homes and on boats. They were also used to pack precious Chinese porcelain for export.
