"Edouard Paupion - Portrait Of A Man"
Edouard PAUPION Dijon, 1854 – Orchamps (Jura), 1912 Oil on canvas 32.5 x 25 cm (44 x 36 cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower left “April 1884 / E. Paupion” Beautiful gilded wooden frame of the 19th century Edouiard Paupion was a pupil of Gérôme and he was a very good portrait painter with the qualities of finish, very realistic rendering of the flesh and this very precise drawing which recalls his master. Our painting is dated April 1884. It may be a work related to the painting that Edouard Paupion exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884 and entitled "Portrait of M. le général de division Bertha”. We found a photo of the general of division and the resemblance is striking (the shape of the nose, the hairstyle and the implantation of the hair and the eyebrows). Although we have no other clues, it could be a preparatory study for a larger painting or a work done alongside the more official portrait that Paupion made and exhibited at the Salon.
