Old brand stenciled on the chassis of the Christie's auction house which corresponds to a deposit number in 1961.

Beautiful and large work by the painter Léon Joubert which represents a general view of Villeneuve les Avignon from the island of Barthelasse. We can distinguish in particular the two emblematic monuments of the city: the Philippe Le Bel Tower and the Fort Saint-André.
The artist has perfectly represented the play of light and the reflections on the water of the Tower.

Pupil of Léon Germain Pelouse and Fernand Cormon, Léon Joubert exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1876 to 1927.
In 1883, he exhibited landscapes at the Art Association of Montreal (Canada) and including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts retains the artist's view of the surroundings of Rochefort.
He takes pleasure in painting views of towns and villages along rivers. It is attached to the School of Barbizon.

In 1895, 1904, 1905, 1908 and 1909, Léon Joubert exhibited views of Avignon and Villeneuve les Avignon at the Salon des artistes. Our painting is perhaps one of the works presented at the Salon by the artist.

Dimensions: 88 x 117 cm without frame and 100.5 x 130 cm with its modern wooden frame.
