Object description :

"Large Support Cabinet Or Low Cabinet Signed Befort Boulle Marquetry Napoleon III Napoleon 3"
DESCRIPTION: very important piece of furniture or low cupboard in brass ball marquetry and brown tortoiseshell. Sumptuous and emblematic model of the BEFORT house, bears two stamps on the back "BEFORT JEUNE". With a remarkable quality of execution, this very architectural piece of furniture, very close to the Louis XIV style, is the work of Mathieu Befort (1816-c.1880), known as Befort Jeune. Cabinetmaker-marquetor established rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles in Paris between 1844 and 1880, he specialized in the manufacture of furniture in marquetry "Boule". This prestigious cabinetmaker has a particular style that makes it easy to identify his furniture. All the bronzes of this piece of furniture bear the "D" mark of the Ducel foundry, a famous foundry in Touraine, which disappeared in 1878, having received prestigious awards and medals at universal exhibitions. Mathieu Befort melted his bronzes in this foundry between 1861 and 1866. Large piece of furniture opening with three doors on the front, executed in ebony veneer. Decorated with "Boule" marquetry, known as a counterpart, made of brass on a brown tortoiseshell background, with foliage, scrollwork and interlacing motifs. As usual with BEFORT, the marquetry is organized around the bronzes that it highlights. Superb ornamentation in gilded bronze, with patterns of masks, leafy lion paws and subjects representing Spring and Winter on the side doors. Resting on six feet, this low cabinet includes multiple ingot molds, spandrels, masks on the sides. The tray, also recurrent with this cabinetmaker, is inlaid with brass threads and framed with bronze angles. The interior is like the rest of the furniture, the doors are paneled and inlaid in the frames of mahogany, amaranth and fine lemon tree fillets. 2 shelves in each compartment, 6 in total. This piece of furniture has only been manufactured in 4 copies in the world, two in part and four in return.
