BARBANTAN Charles (1845-1952)

"Fontaine du Cormoran à Pernes les Fontaines"

Oil on canvas from the Noseda house in Avignon,
Monogrammed lower left,

Beautiful and rare work by the painter Charles Barbantan which represents an animated view of the Fontaine du Cormoran in Pernes les Fontaines in the Vaucluse. The artist has represented comtadines in the foreground doing the laundry in the washhouse of the fountain. In the background, we can see the covered halls of the city.

Pupil of Guilbert d'Anelle in Avignon, he exhibited occasionally at the Salon of French artists from 1865 and regularly in exhibitions in Avignon.
A fresco artist above all, he participated in the revival of religious painting and thus adorned many churches in Vaucluse and Bouches du Rhône.
The artist moved to Pernes les Fontaines, the date on which our work was produced, before settling permanently in Graveson.
Charles Barbantan will have a son, Gaston, who will also be a painter and friend of the painter Auguste Chabaud.

Nb: An old small restoration, without incidence, is to be noted.

Dimensions: 38 x 46 cm without frame and 48 x 56 cm with its original frame in gilded wood.
