Golden Copper Cup - Greece (?) flag

Object description :

"Golden Copper Cup - Greece (?)"
Truncated conical cup in formerly gilded copper with a riveted handle. The “repoussé” decoration turning in relief shows a bull with its head lowered, then a tree and in the center two other bulls with more vigorous bodies. side by side, one turning his head towards the other. The following scene represents a man who holds back the bull in front of him with a rope (symbolic of domestication?) On the sides of two of the bulls we can see what seems to be a signature : 0. Inscription that we see in the same places on the cup from the Museum of Athens (these marks are pointed with an arrow on one of the photographs of the cup presented here and by circles on the last two shots reproducing that of the Museum of Athens *)
The wall is lined inside with a frustoconical sheath of protection finely rolled up at the level of the lip on the upper edge of the decoration. The cup has a handle with a riveted upper attachment, the lower one brazed.
Height: 7.7 cm
Greek Antiquity (?)

Discussion :
It is essential for this type of object to ensure that it is not electroplating, a process which makes a faithful copy of an object by electrolysis. However, the decoration of the goblet presented here shows very slight differences in location and finishing details incompatible with electroplating. However, the dating of this goblet is not specified because obtaining the figures of the wall of this goblet obtained by hammering a thin sheet of gold or copper on a hard matrix (marble, stone, molten metal) which could of course have been used very after the time of its creation. A scientific analysis of the metal would most likely date this object.

Condition:
Good condition of conservation, a consolidation with tin of the bottom on the sheath is however reported.

Museography:
The last photos show one of the two gold goblets found in a tomb at VAPHIO (near SPARTA) dating from the period 1300-1700 BC. JC and preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
