MENDJISKY Serge (1929-2017)

"View of the Grand Canal in Venice"

Oil on canvas,
Signed at the bottom right and dated "77",

Beautiful work from the Divisionism period by the painter Serge Mendjisky which represents a view of Venice, more precisely of the Grand Canal in Venice with the Doge's Palace in the background.
The artist uses a palette of vibrant colors to transcribe the light.
The technique of divisionism and the structure of its composition gives a 3D dimension to his work.

This work is part of the artist's most sought-after period: Divisionism. The artist prefers the word divisionism to the word pointillism because the latter is assimilated to a technique with a spirit.
He qualifies divisionism as "the division of color, then its reconstitution on a canvas must make it possible to bring to it the phenomenon of the vibration of color in its volume of air."
For the artist, light is something that cannot be reproduced but must be represented by something else, by color...

The painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac, who in 1908 knew the painter Paul Signac, declared "to see the rebirth of 'Neo-Impressionist School with a gifted young painter (Serge Mendjisky) whose personal talent rediscovers the Art of Divisionism and reconnects with its tradition'.

Born in 1929 in Paris, Serge Mendjisky became acquainted with the world of Art, from his childhood, thanks to his father who was a painter from the School of Paris. From his childhood he rubbed shoulders with the painters Kisling, Foujita, Soutine, Derain, Kikoin, Dunoyer de Segonzac and Picasso.

The second world war marks a turning point in the life of the artist, his mother is arrested, his father joins the resistance, his older brother is shot in 1942, serge mendjisky finds himself alone in Paris left to himself. In order to support himself, he worked as a stevedore at Bercy station, which joined the resistance.

Serge Mendjisky is an accomplished artist: painter, sculptor, photographer, mosaic artist... For 40 years, the artist devoted himself to Divisionism painting before turning to macro photography in the early 2000s to revisit the codes of Pop Art. It gives photography a pictorial dimension.

Artist recognized throughout the world, he exhibits in Europe, Japan and the United States.
