Marthe Guillain Signed at the bottom Dimensions of the plate: 54 cm Ø Dimensions with frame: 65.5 x 65.5 cm Marthe Guillain (Charleroi 1890 - Watermael-Boitsfort 1974) Modernist painter and watercolorist of portraits, figures, landscapes and still lifes. Collagist. Self-taught. Took drawing lessons at the University of Labor in Charleroi. Teaches French in the Caucasus / Russia. Flees to Paris when the soviet revolution begins. Engages as a nurse; on the front of the Yser. There meets Médard Maertens, the wife and with him wins Paris. Meet artists from the fields of cinema, theater and painting. Made his first personal exhibition in Paris in 1924 with works belonging to Fauvism. Drawing teacher in Istanbul until 1930. The couple separated in 1935. Then settled in Watermael-Boitsfort. Makes his work more intimate. Maintains contact with fawn painters, including Ch. Dehoy and AP de Kat. Travel twice to the Belgian Congo. Subsequently undertakes other trips. Commits to the liberation movements. Retrospectives in Watermael-Boitsfort in 1973 and in Brussels in 1990. Works in the possession of the Charleroi Museum.
