The mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a very frequent subject in ancient painting, taken from the golden legend of Jacques de Voragine, it is the sacred union between the Saint and the infant Jesus who passes the ring to her bridal finger.

Intended for private devotional use, we can date our painting from the second half of the 16th century.
The style presents an association of the main stylistic canons of the first decades of the 16th century.
The aesthetic observation of the painting leads however to a region of Emilia, and in particular of Romagna with echoes close to artists like Bartolomeo Ramenghi (Bagnacavallo, 1484 - Bologna, 1542), Girolamo Marchesi da Cotignola (Cotignola, 1470 / 1480 - Rome? 1540/1550) and in particular to Innocenzo da Imola (Imola, 1490 - Bologna, 1550).

Note that this work should also be compared with the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine from the Turin Museum, attributed to Giovanni Battista Ramenghi. It can be seen as a mix between the Emilia Romagna and Bolognese models of Giulio and Giacomo Francia. It is very difficult to better define this production of private devotional paintings, which was very fashionable at that time, simply by the presence of models that were almost “superimposable” and probably used by several painters often from different backgrounds, but participating in a single figurative culture which will last until the next century.
