Oil on canvas attributed to Jean-Baptiste CLAUDOT (1733 - 1805), animated landscape. 93 x 74 cm Jean-Baptiste Claudot, known as Claudot de Nancy, born in Badonviller on September 19, 17331, died in Nancy on December 27, 1805, is a landscape painter and decorator Lorraine, then French after 1766. Born of the nobility of dress, The son of a lawyer in the sovereign court of Lorraine, Claudot was a pupil of Jean Girardet and André Joly. It combines landscapes with ancient ruins, like the Venetian painters of the 17th century. Émile Hubert Robert, he spreads his taste for ancient ruin and melancholic landscapes. It also corroborates the feeling of Lorraine by painting cities such as Nancy, Lunéville, Bayon, Metz and Pont-à-Mousson. He is also one of the first French painters to make portraits of castles for their owner, mainly around Nancy. Until then this tradition was rather English. JB Claudot is well known as a landscape painter and decorator of the second half of the 18th century. He was trained by Jean Girardet, first painter of King Stanislas and also by André Joly, another Nancy painter. We know his religious works (paintings and decorations of funeral). His characters of the time recall those of Girardet. His paintings are known to Nancy cathedral and its theater decorations. He worked for the city of Nancy around 1764, made a portrait of Stanislas (portrait missing) in 1766. It is found in Paris from 1767 to 1769 with the painter Joseph Vernet which allows him to discover a new form of painting, the painting landscapes (ancient ruins, melancholic landscapes, invented sites often including the details of his Lorraine (representation of cities of Lorraine, architectural elements or costumes of his region) .This form of painting recalls that of Claude Gellée, also in Lorraine and whose he always admired the work, and in 1784 he was seconded by the painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey for the decoration of the new Nancy theater. After a difficult period at the time of the Revolution, he was entrusted with new orders in 1801 ( views of the Nancy area, various orders from notable Lorraine.) The towns of Bayon, Lunéville, Nancy, Pont-à-Mousson are represented, "The hanging net" is at the MBA of Nancy.
