JB Claudot is well known as a landscape painter and decorator of the second half of the 18th century. He was trained by Jean Girardet, first painter of King Stanislas and also by André Joly, another Nancy painter. We know his religious works (paintings and decorations of funeral). His characters of the time recall those of Girardet. His paintings are known to Nancy cathedral and its theater decorations. He worked for the city of Nancy around 1764, made a portrait of Stanislas (portrait missing) in 1766. It is found in Paris from 1767 to 1769 with the painter Joseph Vernet which allows him to discover a new form of painting, the painting landscapes (ancient ruins, melancholic landscapes, invented sites often including the details of his Lorraine (representation of cities of Lorraine, architectural elements or costumes of his region) .This form of painting recalls that of Claude Gellée, also in Lorraine and whose he always admired the work, and in 1784 he was seconded by the painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey for the decoration of the new Nancy theater.After a difficult period at the time of the Revolution, he was entrusted with new orders in 1801 ( views of the Nancy area, various orders from notable Lorraine.)
