Object description :

"Dutch School Seventeenth Century, Young Woman In Oriental Costume"
Dutch school of the seventeenth century, young woman in oriental costume Oil on canvas Gilded wooden frame, model said to Cassetta (nineteenth) Overall dimensions: 78 X 68 cm This interesting portrait is to classify by Nordic Caravaggesque works, specifically Gerrit van Honthorst's school, called Gerard of the night (1590-1656). It is mainly to his militant caravagism in the Netherlands that he owes his present reputation. Born in Utrecht, this painter-cartonnier son was first a student of Abraham Bloemaert before being a disciple of Caravaggio in Rome (probably between 1610 and 1620) where he received his nickname and where he left many caravaggesque works in the churches. Returning to Utrecht in 1620, he soon had students and became a member of the guild of Saint-Luc in 1622, thus attesting to its growing reputation. His nocturnal luminism, so close to Caravaggio, does not exclude the influence of Bassano, nor the Manfredian reminiscences in Dutch-inspired subjects. Very good state of conservation. Sold with detailed invoice & certificate.
